Montevideo, Uruguay. Preparations for the celebration of Iemanja. Every February 2nd, thousands of Uruguayans line up on the beaches to celebrate Iemanja (or Imanja, Yemanja, Yemaja). Iemanja is an orisha (or Orixa, a spirit from Yoruba religion), represents the strength of the ocean, the essence of motherhood and the protection of children. People leave offerings like flowers, perfumes, jewellery which are gathered in large baskets or wooden toy boats and taken out to the sea by local fishermen, in the hope that the goddess will grant them their requests for the coming year.
